Saturday – ChinaFest at VMFA – Get ready to celebrate the lunar new year and the year of the Earth Dog at ChinaFest, the biggest family day of the year at VMFA. They’ve got the Lion Dance, Chinese dancers, kung fu and lots of hands-on art making activities where kids can make their own paper ornaments, Chinese lanterns and watercolor lotus cards, just to name a few. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Free.
Saturday – Mardi Gras RVA – Let the good times roll in Manchester with a Mardi Gras RVA parade followed by a family-friendly indoor party at Dogtown Dance Theatre. The parade starts at 3 p.m. with performers in Mardi Gras costume, cars and people throwing beads in a five block radius around the theater. The party moves indoors with performers, pole dancers, jazz, Cajun food and Legend beer for sale, plus a kids’ activity room with Mardi Gras mask making. Indoor party is ticketed, $15 adults, $5 for ages 5-12, 4 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday – Weekend of Love at Studio Two Three – Prepare yourselves for Valentine’s Day at Studio Two Three where you and your significant other (or kid or bff or whatever) can sit for a black-and-white portrait session for $50, print your own Valentine’s Day card while enjoying a mimosa for $25, or shop the market for handmade goods.
Sunday – “Homeland” Premieres – Ok guys, tune in to Showtime or find a friend with cable access to see the season premiere of “Homeland” this Sunday. You won’t have to look hard to see Richmond hot spots standing in for D.C. locales such as the Jefferson Hotel, Ginter Park and the North Side’s Veritas School campus. The Showtime series has been filming in the Richmond area since the fall. They’ve even been filming inside the RTD office this week, turning our downstairs conference room into a courtroom complete with a metal detector. We’ve been “Homeland”-ed! And it was awesome. Showtime, 9 p.m.
