Friday – Friday Cheers

Friday Cheers kicks off its new season with Japanese Breakfast, an experimental pop band fronted by Korean American musician and author of “Crying in H Mart” Michelle Zauner. Abby Huston opens. The riverfront concert series “returns to normal” with single tickets and a mix-and-mingle, laid-back vibe. Doors open at 6 p.m.; music starts at 6:30 p.m. Brown’s Island. $10 in advance, $15 at the door; free for children 12 and younger.

Friday – Summer Kickoff Concert at Maymont

Maymont is ready to kick off summer with a double-bill outdoor concert from two Richmond favorites: Tom Petty tribute band Full Moon Fever and yacht rockers Three Sheets to the Wind. Plus food trucks and adult beverages for sale. 6-10 p.m. 1700 Hampton St. entrance. $25-$85.

Friday and Saturday – Ashland Book Festival

Ashland Theatre’s first Book Festival is happening this weekend. Poet Zetta Elliott kicks off the festival Friday night with a Q&A moderated by Richmond Times-Dispatch columnist Michael Paul Williams at 7 p.m. Her book “A Place Inside of Me: A Poem to Heal the Heart” is about a young Black boy who grapples with the death of a Black woman at the hands of police. Virginia natives Adriana Trigiani and David Baldacci present a sold-out discussion on Saturday. 205 England St. $10 for students, $20 general admission for Friday.

Sunday – Music in the Park

What a weekend for concerts! Music in the Park, the free outdoor summer concert series in Forest Hill Park, begins this weekend with Rolling Stones tribute band Mother’s Little Helper. 6-8 p.m. 4021 Forest Hill Ave.
